Motivational speakers as the name implies are presenters that strive to get you moving in a focused, effective and creative manner. We all have massive potential, but our fears and our self limiting beliefs often hold us back from accomplishing great things. Keynote speakers and motivational speakers are often hired to help the members of the audience overcome some of their anxieties.
All professional speakers whether they be motivational speakers, keynote speakers or subject matter experts can provide you with a “one sheet.” This is a one-page brochure that outlines the experience of the speaker, and the general topics that the speaker presents. It does not normally list the cost of the speaker.
When you hire a speaker, be prepared to pay a fee and travel expenses. Fees for motivational speakers can range from up and coming local speakers who present for free to $100,000 for a famous author or someone with celebrity status. The majority of motivational speakers and keynote speakers charge from $2500 - $7500 plus all travel expenses. You should plan on booking 3 - 9 months in advance. Motivational speaker fees are sometimes negotiable. The speaker may take part of his/her fee in trade or the fee may be reduced for the right to sell materials at the back of the room. When an event planner does not have a large budget for a keynote speaker, there may be budget available to purchase for example 400 copies of the author’s book to give to attendees. In other words, don’t be shy about being creative.
Hiring a Keynote Speaker
When hiring a motivational speaker or keynote speaker, ask for references and check them out. Ask the speaker where she is speaking next and try to attend in person. Is this person’s style a match for your audience? Most keynote speakers will work with you to tailor the message to your audience.
If you are unable to see the keynote speaker candidate in person, ask to see some video footage. Video footage falls into several categories. The first is a slick presentation that has been edited. While fancy, this may not give you a true feeling for the presenter’s style. Most speakers can provide you with 2-minutes uninterrupted segments of them presenting to a life audience. This will be a much better reflection of a keynote speaker’s style.
Keynote speaker fees while sometimes set by the fame of the speaker are more often set by the value that the speaker brings to the audience. What type of problem do you want the speaker to solve? What type of information can the motivational speaker provide to the audience that will make a real difference in their lives? It is easy to get an audience pumped up, hyped up and ready to go but much more difficult to have each member of the audience leave with a clear goal of the next steps they should take.
To recap, the majority of motivational speakers and keynote speakers charge $2500 to $7500 for a ninety-minute presentation and/or breakout sessions plus travel expenses. Try to see your candidate in live action presenting to another audience. Find someone that is a good fit for the style of your audience and that can provide real problem solving expertise as opposed to just marketing hype.
